Jamia Masjid Srinagar, located on Kathi Darwaza Road in Nowhatta, Srinagar, is one of the oldest, largest, and most historically significant mosques in Jammu and Kashmir. The mosque was originally established in 1394 CE by Sultan Sikandar Shah Miri and later completed and expanded in 1402 CE under the patronage of Mir Mohammad Hamadani, a revered Islamic scholar and the son of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, who played a key role in the spread of Islam in Kashmir. Architecturally, Jamia Masjid Srinagar reflects strong Indo-Persian and Central Asian influences, inspired by traditional courtyard-style mosque architecture. The structure is renowned for its vast rectangular courtyard, traditional wooden roofing, and approximately 378 deodar wood pillars, which support the roof and give the mosque its distinctive identity. Over centuries, the mosque has been rebuilt and restored multiple times due to fires and political changes, yet it has consistently remained a central religious, cultural, and social institution of Srinagar. Situated in the historic locality of Nowhatta, the mosque has not only served as a place of daily and congregational prayers but also as a space for religious learning, public gatherings, and significant socio-religious discourse, making it a symbol of Kashmir’s spiritual heritage and urban history.
