The Jama Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الجمعة درمشالله) is a historic Friday mosque situated in Kotwali Bazar, Dharamshala, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It serves as a prominent place of worship for the local Muslim community and stands as a symbol of cultural and architectural heritage in the region.
The Jama Masjid in Dharamshala, located in the serene surroundings of Himachal Pradesh, has a rich and enduring history. Built in 1719 CE by Janab Ghulam Rasool, the mosque initially stood as a testament to the region's cultural and religious diversity. However, the mosque faced a significant setback during the devastating Kangra earthquake of 1905, which severely damaged its structure, including its iconic dome. In response to this calamity, the Ahle Islam committee took the initiative to restore the mosque. They renovated the damaged portions, ensuring that the structure could once again serve as a place of worship. Following the restoration, the local Muslim community resumed offering prayers regularly, revitalizing the spiritual and communal essence of the mosque. Between the years 1947 and 1995, the Muslim community in Dharamshala and its surroundings faced limitations in terms of available spaces for larger congregational prayers. During this period, the mosque in Yol cantonment was the sole location where Salat-ul-Jumuah, the community prayer held every Friday at noon, and Salatul Eideen, the special prayers for Eid celebrations, were organized. This underscored the need for a more robust and active space for worship within Dharamshala. In 1995, a turning point was marked by the establishment of the Aman-e-Awam Welfare Committee. This committee ensured that Jama Masjid became a thriving center for religious and communal activities, where the five daily obligatory prayers (salah) were regularly offered. In the same year, Imam Muhammad Kamil Jamie Sb was appointed to lead the congregation. Under his guidance, the mosque has continued to function as a vibrant hub for spiritual devotion and community gatherings, strengthening its role as a pillar of the local Muslim community. Imam Muhammad Kamil Jamie Sb remains a respected figure, fostering a sense of unity and continuity in the mosque's longstanding legacy.
