Imam Bara Madin Sahib, also known as Madin Sahib Mosque / Madeen Sahab Masjid, is a historically significant Islamic religious site located in the Zadibal–Hawal area of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The mosque was established in 1448 CE by Sultan Zain-ul-Abideen (Budshah), one of the most enlightened rulers of medieval Kashmir, who commissioned the structure in honour of his revered teacher Syed Mohammad Madani. Syed Mohammad Madani, originally from Medina, arrived in the Indian subcontinent with Timur in 1398 CE and later came to Kashmir as an envoy to Sultan Sikander. Deeply influenced by Kashmiri spiritual life, he chose to settle permanently in the valley and became a disciple of Mir Syed Ali Hamdani. Syed Mohammad Madani initially resided in Rainawari and later moved closer to the then capital Nowshahr, where Sultan Zain-ul-Abideen established a Khanqah for him. He passed away on 11 Rajab 849 AH (13 October 1445 CE), and his funeral prayers were led by Khwaja Baha-ud-Din Ganj Bakhsh. His grave lies adjacent to the mosque, enhancing the site’s status as an Astaan Shareef (shrine). Architecturally, Madin Sahib Mosque is renowned for its unique tile work, considered unparalleled in Kashmir and the Indian subcontinent. The structure originally featured a pagoda-style spire, reflecting the syncretic architectural traditions of the period. Due to a prolonged Sunni–Shia dispute over ownership, the mosque was locked in 2002 and presently stands in a partially ruinous and inactive state. Recognising its heritage value, the mosque is officially listed as a State-protected monument.
