Chika Masjid also called as Chamkan Mosque is another reason to fall in love with Gaur. Constructed in the 14th Century, Chika Mosque is located in Gaur, nearby to the fringe of the neighboring country- Bangladesh and in close proximity to the southwest to Qadam Rasul- which is another historical presentation.
The Chika Masjid, also known as the Chamkan Mosque, is a historic edifice located in Gaur, within the Malda district of West Bengal, India. Constructed in 1475 by Sultan Yusuf Shah, the mosque's name is derived from the local term "Chika," meaning bats, due to the large number of bats that once inhabited its interiors. Architectural Features: Structure: The mosque is a single-domed structure, showcasing a blend of Islamic and Hindu architectural elements. The walls are adorned with intricate terracotta carvings, and the stonework of the doors and lintels bears images reminiscent of Hindu idols, reflecting the syncretic architectural traditions of the period. Design Elements: The mosque's design includes a square room with verandahs on three sides. The central domed chamber contains a small, carved pedestal of black stone, which historically held sacred relics. While primarily serving as a place of worship, historical accounts suggest that the Chika Masjid may have been repurposed during different periods. Some sources indicate it was utilized as a prison or "chor-khana" by Sultan Hussain Shah (1493-1519 A.D).
