The TNTJ Markaz is a significant religious and social landmark in Cumbum, Theni district. Situated on the busy Kombai Road, it serves as the regional headquarters and primary place of worship for the followers of the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath in the southern Cumbum Valley. Historical and Religious Significance Reformist Foundation: The Markaz is the local centre for the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath (TNTJ), a prominent Islamic social and religious organisation. It is dedicated to the propagation of Tawhid (the oneness of God) and follows a reformist approach, focusing on the Quran and Sunnah while actively campaigning against innovations and superstitions. Establishment: The TNTJ Markaz in Cumbum was formally established in 2004. Since its inception, it has served as a pivotal site for the organisation's growth in the Theni district, transitioning from a small meeting hall to a large, multi-functional religious centre. A Centre for Dawah: Unlike traditional neighbourhood mosques, the Markaz functions as a "Dawah" (outreach) centre. The weekly Friday Jumu'ah sermons are notably delivered in Tamil, with a heavy emphasis on social reform, women's rights in Islam, and the rejection of the dowry system and other social evils. Social and Humanitarian Work: The institution is highly regarded in the Cumbum area for its extensive humanitarian efforts. It coordinates blood donation camps (for which TNTJ is a state leader), disaster relief programs, and provides educational and medical assistance to the underprivileged, regardless of their religious background. Educational Role: The Markaz houses a Madrasa that focuses on literalist scriptural education and provides specialised classes for adults and women to understand the Quranic text in their native language. Location and Connectivity: The Markaz is strategically positioned in Nethaji Nagar on the Kombai Road, which connects the town of Cumbum to the surrounding agricultural and hill stations. Functional Architecture: The building is designed with a focus on utility and large congregations. It features a spacious, open prayer hall that can accommodate hundreds of worshippers, particularly during the two Eid festivals. Administrative Hub: As a "Markaz" (Centre), the building also serves as the administrative office for local TNTJ activities, including community mediation, charity distribution, and the coordination of local social campaigns. Strategic Access: Its location on the State Highway makes it highly accessible for residents of Cumbum as well as those travelling from neighbouring towns like Uthamapalayam and Kombai.
