Dastgeer Sahib Khanyar is one of the most revered and spiritually significant Sufi shrines in Srinagar, located in the historic Khanyar area of Jammu and Kashmir. The shrine is dedicated to Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani (RA), the celebrated 12th-century saint of Baghdad and founder of the Qadriya Sufi order, whose teachings profoundly influenced Islamic spirituality across the Muslim world, including Kashmir. The present shrine was originally constructed in 1806 CE and later expanded in 1877 CE, making it a more than 200-year-old religious monument. Over time, Dastgeer Sahib became one of the foremost pilgrimage centers in Kashmir, attracting devotees who visit for prayers, remembrance (zikr), and spiritual solace. The shrine is particularly renowned for preserving sacred relics, including the Mouia Pak (a hair strand associated with Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani) and a copy of the Holy Qur’an attributed to Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA). These relics greatly enhance the sanctity of the site. Architecturally, the shrine historically reflected exquisite traditional Kashmiri wooden craftsmanship, featuring carved interiors, papier-mâché ornamentation, lattice work, and decorative floral motifs. In 2012, a devastating fire damaged much of the original structure, but the shrine was subsequently restored with strong public and institutional support, preserving its spiritual and cultural importance. The annual Urs celebration draws thousands of devotees from across Kashmir, reaffirming its role as a living center of faith, devotion, and Sufi heritage.
