Khanqah Naqshband Sahib is one of the most important Sufi shrines of Srinagar, located on Ganderbal Road / Khwaja Bazar area near Nowhatta, Jammu and Kashmir. The khanqah was established in 1633 CE by Khwaja Khawand Mahmood Naqshbandi, a revered spiritual figure associated with the Naqshbandi Sufi order, one of the major mystical traditions of Islam. Since its foundation, the shrine has served as a center for prayer, meditation, spiritual instruction, and remembrance of God (zikr). It occupies a distinguished place in the religious history of Kashmir and has long attracted devotees, scholars, and seekers of spiritual guidance. The shrine is especially significant because in 1699 CE, it historically housed the sacred relic believed to be associated with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) before the relic was later connected with Hazratbal Shrine. This event elevated the shrine’s prestige and linked it with the famous Khoja Digar prayer tradition. Architecturally, Khanqah Naqshband Sahib is renowned for its exquisite traditional Kashmiri wooden and brick construction, featuring beautifully crafted Khatamband ceilings, Pinjrakari lattice work, carved wooden panels, and intricate painted lacquer decoration known as Naqashi. The shrine reflects the peak of Kashmiri sacred architecture and craftsmanship. It also hosts the annual Urs of Khwaja Moin-Ud-Din Naqshbandi, drawing large gatherings of devotees. Today, the khanqah remains a living symbol of Kashmir’s Sufi devotion, artistry, and spiritual heritage.
