Nishat Garden, popularly known as Nishat Bagh, is one of the most celebrated Mughal gardens of Kashmir, located on Boulevard Road, Nishat, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, along the eastern bank of Dal Lake. The garden was established in 1633 CE by Asif Khan, the elder brother of Nur Jahan and father-in-law of Shah Jahan. The name Nishat means “Garden of Joy” or “Garden of Delight,” reflecting its purpose as a royal pleasure garden. Built during the height of Mughal appreciation for Kashmir’s natural beauty, Nishat Garden was designed as a grand terraced landscape overlooking Dal Lake with the majestic Zabarwan Range rising behind it. The garden is famous for its twelve terraces, said by some to symbolize the zodiac signs or the twelve months of the year. These terraces are arranged in descending order from the mountainside toward the lake, linked by a central water channel fed by mountain springs. The garden showcases classic Mughal landscape principles of symmetry, flowing water, fountains, chinar trees, flower beds, and panoramic vistas. Historically, it served as a royal retreat and a venue for leisure, poetry, and imperial gatherings. Today, Nishat Garden is among the most visited attractions in Kashmir, drawing tourists, historians, photographers, and nature lovers from around the world. It remains a living symbol of Mughal artistry, Persian-inspired garden planning, and the timeless beauty of Srinagar.
