Shalimar Garden Srinagar, popularly known as Shalimar Bagh, is one of the most magnificent Mughal gardens in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, situated to the northeast of Dal Lake. The garden was established in 1619 CE by Emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife Nur Jahan. It was originally known as Farah Baksh meaning Delightful and later expanded as Faiz Baksh meaning Bountiful. Shalimar Bagh is considered one of the finest achievements of Mughal horticulture and landscape architecture, and it later inspired the Shalimar Gardens of Lahore and Delhi. The garden covers approximately 12.4 hectares (31 acres) and is laid out in the classic Persian-Mughal charbagh style, adapted beautifully to Kashmir’s terrain. It consists of three principal terraces, historically reserved for the emperor, nobility, and the public. A central water canal, fed by the Harwan canal, runs through the garden, lined with fountains, stone chutes, and pools that create a serene soundscape. The site is adorned with majestic chinar trees, flower beds, pavilions, carved stone pathways, and the famous black marble pavilion (Diwan-i-Khas) used by the emperor. Set against the Zabarwan foothills, Shalimar Garden became a royal retreat for leisure, poetry, and courtly gatherings. Today, it is a public park often called the “Crown of Srinagar” and remains one of Kashmir’s most visited heritage attractions, representing elegance, engineering, and timeless natural beauty.
