Chashme Shahi Garden, also known as Chashma Shahi or Chashma-i-Shahi, is one of the most elegant Mughal gardens in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, located on Boulevard Road, Chashma Shahi, Rainawari, overlooking Dal Lake. The garden was established in 1632 CE by Ali Mardan Khan under the आदेश of Emperor Shah Jahan, and was dedicated to his eldest son Dara Shikoh. The name Chashme Shahi means “Royal Spring”, derived from the natural freshwater spring that forms the heart of the garden and has long been celebrated for its clear, sweet, and reputedly health-giving water. Unlike the larger Mughal gardens of Srinagar, Chashme Shahi is comparatively compact yet highly refined in design. It is laid out in three terraced levels, built along the hillside in classic Mughal style, with a central water channel flowing from the spring through fountains, cascades, pools, and carved stone chutes. The garden is enriched with manicured lawns, flower beds, chinar and ornamental trees, and panoramic views of Dal Lake, Srinagar city, and the surrounding mountains. Historically, it served as a royal retreat for the Mughal court and as a place of relaxation and contemplation. The spring has been valued for centuries and continues to attract visitors who drink its water. Today, Chashme Shahi remains one of Kashmir’s most admired heritage gardens, known for combining natural beauty, engineering skill, and imperial aesthetics.
