Pari Mahal, meaning “Palace of Fairies,” is one of the most iconic historic monuments of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, situated near Pari Mahal Parking on the Zabarwan hills overlooking Dal Lake. The monument was established in the mid-17th century (around 1650 CE) by Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan. It was built on the site of an older Buddhist monastery and later transformed into a Sufi retreat, observatory, and center of learning. Dara Shikoh, known for his intellectual curiosity and spiritual outlook, is believed to have used Pari Mahal as a place for study, contemplation, and teaching. Pari Mahal is famous for its seven terraced gardens, arched chambers, carved walls, and commanding panoramic views of Dal Lake, Srinagar city, and the surrounding mountains. Unlike conventional Mughal pleasure gardens, the structure combines architectural elegance with scholarly and spiritual purpose. Water channels once irrigated the terraced lawns, enhancing its beauty and functionality. Historically, the monument reflects Dara Shikoh’s syncretic interests in Islamic mysticism, philosophy, and comparative religion. Today, Pari Mahal is protected as a heritage monument and remains one of the most visited tourist attractions in Kashmir, especially admired for its sunset views, historical ambiance, and blend of architecture with natural scenery.
