Verinag is a historic town and major tourist destination in Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, widely known as the “Gateway to Kashmir.” Located at the entrance of the Kashmir Valley on the Jammu–Srinagar route, Verinag is most famous for its magnificent spring, Mughal garden, and association with the origin of the Jhelum River. The name Verinag is believed to derive from Nila Nag, the mythical serpent deity linked in local tradition to Rishi Kashyap, giving the site deep historical and cultural significance. The crystal-clear spring has been revered for centuries because its water remains pure, abundant, and perennial. The site achieved monumental importance during the Mughal era when Emperor Jahangir ordered the construction of an elegant octagonal stone basin around the spring in 1620 CE. Later, Emperor Shah Jahan enhanced the surrounding area by laying out a grand Mughal garden. Spread over approximately 5.30 hectares, the garden contains terraced lawns, majestic chinar trees, flower beds, water channels, and stone walkways, reflecting the classic Persian-Mughal garden tradition adapted to Kashmir’s landscape. Historically, Verinag served as an imperial retreat and remains one of the earliest major monuments encountered when entering the Valley from Jammu, especially after crossing the Jawahar Tunnel. Today, it is admired for its scenic beauty, calm atmosphere, blue spring waters, and immense heritage value.
