Named after Hussain Shah Wali, the master architect behind its creation, the lake has a heart-shaped outline and covers an area of 5.7 square kilometers. It is a prominent landmark that connects the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad while offering a harmonious blend of history, art, and natural beauty. Architectural and Historical Significance Hussain Sagar was constructed across a tributary of the Musi River to serve as a perennial source of water for Hyderabad, fulfilling this role until the construction of Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar. The lake's strategic design allowed it to be fed by canals from the Musi River, a testament to the advanced water management systems of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. The lake is also home to the Gautama Buddha Statue, a towering monolithic sculpture carved from white granite rock. Weighing a colossal 450 tons and standing on Gibraltar Rock at the lake's center, this statue was meticulously crafted by 200 sculptors over two years and erected on April 12, 1992. It symbolizes peace and harmony and has become an iconic feature of Hyderabad?s skyline. Tank Bund and Modern Additions The Tank Bund Road, which serves as the lake's embankment, was originally widened in 1946 under Sir Mirza Ismail. Further enhancements were made in 1987-88 under N.T. Rama Rao, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The road was adorned with: Fountains with dancing waters. Colored lights illuminating the lake at night. Bronze statues of notable personalities from Telugu culture and history, such as Alluri Sitarama Raju and Rani Rudrama Devi. Hussain Sagar is not just a lake; it is an experience.
