Bhuvanagiri Fort is situated in the heart of Bhuvanagiri City in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri District, Telangana, India, approximately 50 kilometers from Hyderabad. The fort is perched atop a large rock, offering a commanding view of the surrounding area. This historic fort, with its strategic location, has witnessed various periods of history and serves as a notable landmark in the region. Bhongir Fort, also known as Bhuvanagiri Fort, has a rich history dating back to the 10th century. The fort was originally built in 1076 by the Western Chalukya ruler Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya IV on an isolated monolithic rock, which provided both strategic defense and commanding views of the surrounding area. The fort was named Tribhuvanagiri in his honor, later evolving to Bhuvanagiri. Inscriptions in Kannada and Telugu found within the fort provide valuable insights into the lives and customs of the people from that era, revealing that the fort was initially under the rule of the Chalukya dynasty and later the Kakatiya dynasty. The architecture of the fort, including stone walls, steps through granite archways, and crumbling ruins, offers a glimpse into its glorious past. During the 15th century, the fort was ceded to the Bahamani Sultans, after which it was taken over by a local governor. Under the Qutb Shahis, the fort became a prison for those who threatened their rule. Despite its strategic importance, the fort escaped the attention of the British, who did not occupy it during their colonial period. After the downfall of the Nizam's reign and the communist revolution in the late 1940s, Bhuvanagiri began to be neglected. Perched on a unique egg-shaped rock hill rising over 500 feet, Bhongir Fort is an impressive structure. The steps leading from the base to the top of the hill remain intact, and at the foot of the steps lies a Hanuman Temple with two entry points, fortified by large rocks. This natural defense made the fort nearly impregnable to invaders. The fort?s historical features, such as a moat, underground chambers, trapdoors, an armory, stables, ponds, and wells, offer fascinating insights into its past. The fort is also linked with the legacy of the heroic queen Rudramadevi, and the breathtaking countryside surrounding it enhances its allure. The Bala Hisar or citadel at the summit provides a panoramic view of the area. A popular legend suggests that there was once an underground corridor connecting Bhongir Fort to Golconda Fort. Additionally, a statue found during nearby excavations is placed at the fort?s entrance, adding a mystical element to the site. Today, the fort is a popular trekking destination, attracting tourists with its historic charm and awe-inspiring views.
