Puranapul, or the Old Bridge, constructed in 1578 during the reign of Ibrahim Qutb Shah, is one of the earliest bridges built in Hyderabad, spanning the Musi River. It is said that the bridge was built by the Qutb Shahi king Ibrahim to facilitate his son, Prince Abu, to cross the river to meet his love, Bhagmati, a Hindu girl from Chichlam village. The romantic tale is one of the most popular legends associated with the bridge, and it also earned the nickname ?Pyarana Pul? because of this story. The bridge is made of masonry arches and holds historical significance in Hyderabad's development. It connects the two banks of the Musi River, contributing to the city's urban growth. In addition to its role as a crossing, the Purana Pul has become a symbolic connection to the origins of Hyderabad. Another legend, though disputed, links the bridge to the naming of the city. It is believed that the wife of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, Bhagmati (who later took the name Hyder Mahal), inspired the name of the city?Hyderabad. The Purana Pul has witnessed significant events in Hyderabad's history, including the 1908 Musi River flood that caused widespread devastation but left the bridge intact, demonstrating its resilience. The bridge is flanked by the Puranapul Darwaza, a gateway that stands as one of the last surviving entrances to the old walled city. Originally, there were thirteen such gateways built during the 1724 conquest of Golconda.
