The Khuthbapalli Masjid, also known as Jamia Mosque, is a prominent 17th-century mosque in Pondicherry. It is considered the first mosque built in the region. Initially located in White Town, it was later relocated to its current site. The mosque is known for its historical significance and peaceful atmosphere. Inside, it houses a dargah of Moulla Saiullbum and a pond with fishes, enhancing its charm. The mosque is aligned to face Mecca and is an important site for prayers and cultural events, especially during Ramadan.
Khuthbapalli Masjid, often referred to as Jamia Mosque, is one of the most significant and historic mosques in Pondicherry. Dating back to the 17th century, this mosque is a testament to the secular and cultural diversity of the region. It holds the title of being the first mosque established in Pondicherry, originally located in White Town. However, under French colonial rule, it was shifted to its present location in the southern part of the town. The term "Khuthbapalli" is derived from "Khutbah," meaning the Friday sermon, indicating its function as a place for both daily prayers and special Friday congregational prayers. Historical records, including a Dutch map from 1693, reveal the presence of two mosques in White Town during that era?Khuthbapalli and Meerapalli. While Meerapalli was relocated in the early 18th century, Khuthbapalli remained in White Town until the town's destruction by the British in 1761. The street Rue de la Monnaie, previously called Rue de la Mosque, stood testament to the mosque's original location. The mosque's design is deeply rooted in Islamic tradition and faces Mecca. Its architecture is both simple and serene, reflecting the mosque's religious and historical importance. Inside, it features a dargah of Moulla Saiullbum, a sacred space revered by devotees. A pond within the mosque complex houses fishes, adding a tranquil element to the site. Additionally, there are separate halls?one for prayers and another used during Ramadan for preparing fasting meals for devotees. The Khuthbapalli Masjid is not only a religious site but also a cultural and historical landmark. Its preservation through centuries of colonial and political changes underscores its importance to the local Muslim community and the broader history of Pondicherry. Today, it stands as a symbol of unity, spirituality, and resilience.
