Goshamahal Baradari is a historically significant palace built in 1684 by Sultan Abul Hassan Tana Shah, the last ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty in Hyderabad.
The Goshamahal Baradari, also known as the Freemasons' Hall, is an architectural marvel built in 1682, situated in Goshamahal, a suburb of Hyderabad, India. Originally serving as a palace during the reign of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, the structure has been remarkably preserved over centuries. In 1872, it was donated by the Nizam of Hyderabad for use as a Masonic hall, and by 1933, it had gained the unique distinction of being the oldest structure in India actively serving as a Masonic lodge. Today, it stands as a proud symbol of heritage and history for Freemasons in the country. The Baradari is renowned for its grandiose architecture, including its massive and majestic balustrades, intricate walls adorned with portraits and photographs of Freemasons in ceremonial regalia, and an opulent banquet hall, all of which leave visitors in awe. Currently, it houses nine Masonic lodges and chapters, maintaining its status as a thriving hub of Freemasonry in India. Freemasonry, often regarded as one of the world?s oldest secular fraternal societies, upholds the principles of the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. The Goshamahal Baradari's historic significance is further elevated by its association with prominent figures, such as Justice Devender Gupta, several nawabs from the Nizam's era, Nawab Salar Jung Bahadur, Maharaja Sir Kishen Pershad, and Raja Bahadur Venkatarama Reddy, among others. Adding to its prestige is the display of portraits of eminent Freemasons, including that of the 7th Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, on its walls, which narrate the legacy of Freemasonry in Hyderabad. In keeping with modern requirements, an elevator was installed in the east wing of the building in 2015, blending contemporary functionality with its historical essence. The Goshamahal Baradari remains not just a Masonic temple but a monument of immense cultural and architectural significance, embodying centuries of tradition, fraternity, and historical richness.
