Jama Masjid, originally named Safa Masjid, is a historic mosque located in Golconda, Hyderabad, India. This architectural marvel, now 505 years old, was constructed in 1518 CE by Sultan Quli Qutb Shah, who was then a governor under the Bahmani Sultanate. Later, Sultan Quli would go on to establish the Qutb Shahi dynasty and become its first ruler. The mosque was built during a transformative period when Sultan Quli rebuilt the mud fort of Golconda, renaming the city as Muhammad Nagar in honor of the Prophet Muhammad. It is believed that the mosque was initially constructed as "Safa Masjid," a name that was later changed to Jama Masjid as it became a central place of worship in Golconda. The mosque holds significant historical and architectural importance. It is one of the few structures from the Bahmani Sultanate period in Hyderabad that embodies the distinctive Bahmani architectural style. The design features a single dome over the entrance gateway, a spacious courtyard paved with granite slabs, and a large prayer hall divided into four aisles supported by five arches. The mosque?s elegance and symmetry reflect the grandeur of medieval Islamic architecture. Tragically, the Jama Masjid became the site of political turmoil in 1543 CE, when Sultan Quli Qutb Shah was assassinated while offering prayers. He was killed by Mir Mahmud Hamadani, the Quiladar (commander) of Golconda Fort, under the orders of Sultan Quli?s son, Jamsheed Quli Qutb Shah, who sought to ascend to the throne. Despite this tragic event, the mosque remains a symbol of Hyderabad?s rich cultural and historical legacy.
