Hazrat Kale Shah Mastan Wali Dargah, popularly known as Hazrath Kale Masthan Dargah, is one of the most revered Sufi shrines in Guntur, deeply rooted in the spiritual and cultural history of the region. According to tradition, Hazrat Kale Shah Mastan Wali (also known as Sri Nalla Mastan Baba) was born in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, and later renounced worldly life to pursue intense spiritual penance. After traveling across several regions, he finally settled in Guntur as an Avadhoota (ascetic saint), where he spent many years spreading messages of spiritual devotion, inner discipline, and religious harmony. The saint is believed to have attained samadhi (union with the divine) in Guntur on 23 May 1895, and legends suggest he lived for nearly 250 years, though his exact age remains unknown. The dargah became a symbol of unity, attracting followers from all religions who believe in the saint’s miraculous powers and blessings. A unique feature of the shrine is the Holy Chair and Holy Cot, associated with the Baba’s life, on which special rituals are performed. The annual Urs festival, lasting five days, draws thousands of devotees from Guntur, Prakasam, Krishna, Nellore, and neighboring districts. The highlight of the Urs is the vibrant “Chandal” procession, where fakirs walk through the town’s main streets, accompanied by folk artistes, beginning from the house where Baba once lived and culminating at the dargah, reinforcing its role as a living center of Sufi tradition and communal harmony.
