The Dargah Hazrat Shah Kaleemullah Jahanabadi Chisti R.A. is a revered Sufi shrine dedicated to the great saint Hazrat Shah Kaleemullah Jahanabadi, a prominent figure in the Chishti order of Sufism. Hazrat Shah Kaleem-ullah Jahanabadi, a revered Sufi saint, played a pivotal role in shaping the spiritual and cultural heritage of Mughal-era Delhi. As the grandson of Ustad Ahmed Lahori, the architect of the Taj Mahal, he inherited a legacy of creativity and devotion. Born in Shahjahanabad (modern-day Old Delhi), Shah Kaleem-ullah gained widespread recognition for his piety, inclusiveness, and teachings aligned with the Chishti Sufi tradition, which embraced individuals from all backgrounds. Life and Contributions Living during the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb, Shah Kaleem-ullah navigated a period marked by political turbulence and military campaigns. Despite these challenges, he founded a madrasa offering free education, board, and lodging, attracting students from across the Islamic world. His spiritual stature was so significant that Aurangzeb commissioned the construction of a Khanqah, a center for spiritual gatherings, to support his mission. His influence extended into the reign of Aurangzeb's successors. Emperor Bahadur Shah I became his disciple in 1711, highlighting Shah Kaleem-ullah's exceptional standing in Mughal society. His spiritual legacy persisted through his disciples, including the renowned Nizamuddin Aurangabadi, and through letters that delved into the profound intricacies of Islamic mysticism. Passing and Legacy Shah Kaleem-ullah passed away on October 17, 1720 (24th Rabi' al-Awwal, 1142 AH), leaving a legacy of spiritual enlightenment and social service. However, the events following the 1857 Indian Rebellion profoundly affected his legacy. British punitive measures led to the demolition of much of the area surrounding his Khanqah, although his grave remained intact. It was later restored through the efforts of Khwaja Ghulam Farid, bringing the dargah back to its former glory. Located near the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, the dargah of Shah Kaleem-ullah Jahanabadi continues to be a beacon of Sufi spirituality. The annual Urs, attended historically by figures like the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, draws devotees from diverse backgrounds, reaffirming the saint's message of harmony and inclusiveness. Enduring Impact Shah Kaleem-ullah's teachings and contributions to tasawwuf have left an indelible mark on the spiritual landscape of India. His dargah stands as a symbol of the enduring power of Sufism to bridge divides and inspire generations in the pursuit of spiritual and communal harmony.
