Shahi Jama Masjid

Shahi Jama Masjid is one of the most prominent historical mosques of Mathura, located in the bustling Chowk Bazar area. Built during the Mughal period, it is renowned for its architectural beauty, towering minarets, and religious significance.

Shahi Jama Masjid, situated in the heart of Chowk Bazar, Mathura, is a historic congregational mosque commissioned in 1660–1661 CE by Abd-al-Nabi Khan, the governor of Mathura during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. It is regarded as one of the most important examples of Mughal Islamic architecture in the region. Constructed primarily from red sandstone, the mosque stands on an elevated plinth and is distinguished by its four lofty minarets, three domes, spacious courtyard, and elegant gateway adorned with decorative tile work. The mosque has long served as the principal centre for daily prayers, Jumu‘ah congregations, Ramadan observances, and Eid celebrations for the Muslim community of Mathura. Located amid the traditional markets of Chowk Bazar and Chatta Bazar, the mosque forms an integral part of Mathura's historical and cultural landscape. Its striking silhouette remains one of the city's most recognizable Islamic landmarks.
