Shah Waliullah Dehlawi (1703?1762) was a prominent Sunni Islamic scholar, theologian, and Sufi reformer from the Indian subcontinent. His full name in Arabic is قطب الدين أحمد بن عبد الرحيم العمري الدهلوي (Quṭb ad-Dīn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd-ur-Raḥīm al-ʿUmarī ad-Dehlawī). Shah Waliullah Dehlavi (1703?1762) was a prominent Islamic scholar, theologian, and reformer from Delhi, India. Born on 21 February 1703, he was the son of Shah Abdur Rahim, an influential Islamic scholar and founder of the Madrasah-i Rahimiyah. This institution played a critical role in Islamic education during the Mughal era. Shah Abdur Rahim was also a member of the committee that compiled the famous Islamic legal code, Fatawa-e-Alamgiri, under Emperor Aurangzeb. Early Life and Education Shah Waliullah displayed prodigious intellectual abilities from a young age. He memorized the Qur'an by the age of seven and mastered Arabic and Persian shortly thereafter. By the age of 15, he had completed the standard curriculum of Hanafi law, theology, geometry, arithmetic, and logic, and assumed the role of dean at his father?s madrasah following his father's death two years later. He married at 14 and devoted himself to religious studies and teaching. In 1732, at the age of 29, Shah Waliullah traveled to Makkah, where he deepened his knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and spirituality. Philosophy and Beliefs Shah Waliullah is renowned for his advocacy of a return to the principles and practices of early Islam. He emphasized the importance of adhering to Arabic Islamic culture and strongly opposed the incorporation of non-Islamic customs into Muslim life. He believed that Muslims should distinguish themselves from non-Muslims in their habits, culture, and traditions, striving to emulate the Prophet Muhammad and the early Arabs. Shah Waliullah argued that Islamic teachings were universally applicable and provided comprehensive solutions to social, moral, economic, and political challenges. He also emphasized Jihad as a means to protect and strengthen the Muslim community and advocated for the promotion of cultural practices that defined Islamic identity. Major Works Shah Waliullah?s scholarly contributions spanned theology, Sufism, and metaphysics. Some of his most notable works include: Hujjat Allah al-Balighah (The Conclusive Argument of God): This seminal work discusses the universal applicability of Islam and its solutions to human problems. Al-Khayr al-Kathir (The Abundant Good): A philosophical exploration of divine wisdom. Sata'at (Manifestations) and Lamahat (Flashes of Lightning): Influential writings on Sufism and spiritual experiences. Futuh al-Haramayn (Emanations of Mecca and Medina): A mystical treatise on his spiritual experiences in the holy cities. Al-Tafhimat (Instructions or Clear Understanding): A comprehensive metaphysical text. Al-Budur al-Bazighah (The Full Moons Rising in Splendour): A treatise on Islamic thought. Legacy and Death Shah Waliullah?s ideas significantly influenced subsequent Islamic reform movements, particularly through the work of his descendants, such as his grandson Shah Ismail Dehlvi, a key figure in the Deobandi movement. He passed away on 20 August 1762 (29 Muharram 1176 AH) in Delhi during the Jummah prayer and was buried beside his father in the Mehdiyan graveyard, near Delhi Gate. His legacy endures as a reformer who sought to revive Islamic teachings and adapt them to the challenges of his time.
