Lodi Period Well

Lodi Period Well

Approach: Approximately 1 km south of Mehrauli bus stand and 2 km north-east of Qutub Minar metro station via Anubrat Marg. Airport: IGI Railway Station: Nizamuddin Bus Station: Mehrauli

This historic well dates back to the Lodi period and was constructed to address the essential need for tapping groundwater, storing rainwater, and making it accessible to the local population. In the surrounding areas, the construction of several tanks and wells became vital in ensuring water availability, and they also reflected the artistic and architectural skills of the local people. The well is circular in shape, situated on elevated ground, with a diameter of approximately 3 meters. To prevent surface water from pooling around the well and causing potential damage, the land around the well has been intentionally mounded. This allows water to flow away from the well, ensuring that the area remains dry. The well itself is lined with stone and mortar, a construction technique designed to prevent collapse and maintain its integrity over time. However, the depth of the well is currently filled with garbage and debris, and it is covered with an iron jali (grill). Additionally, vegetation has started to grow both inside and around the well, which requires immediate removal to preserve its structure and functionality. The construction of the well is primarily made from rubble masonry and coated with plaster, which was a common technique during the Lodi period to ensure durability and water tightness. Despite the neglect, the well still stands as an important example of the local water management practices and architectural traditions of that time.
