Bara Shaheed Dargah is one of the most revered and historically significant Sufi shrines in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, located in Ambedkar Nagar on the banks of the historic Nellore Tank (lake). The name "Bara Shaheed Dargah" literally means "Shrine of the Twelve Martyrs" (bara = twelve, shaheed = martyrs, dargah = shrine). The shrine is an important centre of Islamic spirituality and communal harmony, attracting thousands of devotees from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, other parts of India, and abroad. The dargah complex also includes the city's largest Eidgah, where the Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha congregational prayers are held, along with a public park and tourist facilities. History According to local tradition and a Persian inscription preserved within the dargah complex, the shrine contains the tombs of twelve Muslim warriors (martyrs). These martyrs are believed to have belonged to one of the earliest Muslim groups to enter the Nellore region and sacrificed their lives while spreading Islam. Although this tradition is deeply respected by devotees, it is based on local historical belief rather than verified historical evidence. The shrine has nevertheless remained an important spiritual landmark in Nellore for centuries and is closely associated with the region's Sufi heritage. Rottela Panduga (Rotiyaan ki Eid) Bara Shaheed Dargah is internationally known for hosting the annual Rottela Panduga (also called Rotiyaan ki Eid), a unique three-day Urs festival observed during the Islamic month of Muharram. The festival attracts lakhs of devotees from different religions and communities. A distinctive feature of the festival is the exchange of rotis (flatbreads). Devotees who have had their wishes fulfilled exchange rotis with others praying for similar blessings—such as good health, marriage, education, employment, children, or prosperity. After the exchange, worshippers offer Fātiḥah (supplication) at the dargah, expressing gratitude and seeking divine blessings. Over time, this tradition has become a symbol of faith, hope, gratitude, and communal harmony, reflecting the inclusive spirit of Sufism. Religious and Cultural Significance Bara Shaheed Dargah is not only a place of ziyārah (pilgrimage) but also an important centre for Qur'anic recitation, dhikr (remembrance of Allah), charitable activities, and spiritual gatherings. Throughout the year, devotees visit the shrine to seek blessings and inner peace. During the annual Urs, the entire area becomes a vibrant centre of religious devotion and cultural interaction, making the dargah one of the most prominent Islamic heritage sites in Andhra Pradesh.
