Khooni Darwaza, translating to "Bloody Gate," is a historic monument located on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in New Delhi, India. Constructed during the reign of Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century, it was originally known as Kabuli Darwaza, named after the caravans traveling to Kabul that passed through it. Over time, it became infamously associated with bloodshed, leading to its current name. Historical Significance: The gate has witnessed several tragic events: Mughal Era: Emperor Jahangir ordered the execution of two sons of Abdul Rahim Khan-I-Khana, one of Akbar's Navaratnas, at Khooni Darwaza. Their bodies were left to rot at the gate. 1857 Rebellion: During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, British officer Major William Hodson executed three Mughal princes Mirza Mughal, Mirza Khizr Sultan, and Mirza Abu Bakht at this gate. This event significantly contributed to the gate's association with bloodshed. Architecture: Standing 15.5 meters tall, Khooni Darwaza is constructed from Delhi quartzite stone. The three-tiered structure features three staircases leading to different levels, which were believed to have been used for displaying the heads of offenders during Sher Shah Suri's time. Khooni Darwaza is open to visitors, with the best time to visit being between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., when the weather is relatively cooler and the crowd is less.
