Shahi Jama Masjid is the principal historic congregational mosque of Chatta Bazar, Chowk Bazar, Mathura. Built during the Mughal period, it is one of the city's most significant Islamic monuments, renowned for its imposing minarets, Mughal architecture, and enduring religious importance.
Shahi Jama Masjid stands in the heart of Chatta Bazar, Chowk Bazar, and is among the finest examples of Mughal-era Islamic architecture in the Braj region. It was commissioned in 1661 CE by Abd-al-Nabi Khan (Nabir Khan) during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The mosque has served as the principal congregational mosque of Mathura for more than three centuries. Constructed primarily of red sandstone, the mosque is distinguished by its four lofty minarets, elegant arches, spacious courtyard, and richly ornamented façades featuring decorative plaster and tile work. Its elevated platform and monumental gateway make it one of the most recognizable landmarks in the old city. The mosque continues to function as an active place of worship, hosting the five daily prayers, Jumu'ah congregations, Ramadan prayers, and Eid celebrations. Located amid the bustling markets of Chatta Bazar and Chowk Bazar, it remains an important symbol of Mathura's multicultural and architectural heritage.
