During the British Raj, the Kothi became the official residence of the City Magistrate, serving as a key administrative hub until 1904. However, time brought change, and in 1931-32, the original Kothi was demolished to make way for the Chief Post Master?s General Office (CPMG), which stands tall today. A clock tower was added at its center, a nod to colonial-era grandeur, but despite this transformation, the place is still fondly remembered as Kankar Wali Kothi by the locals. Even today, as one walks past the grand CPMG office, echoes of its past still linger. The walls may no longer carry the kankar, but the spirit of its legacy remains deeply embedded in Lucknow?s architectural heritage.
