Khwaja Baqi Billah, born Razi-ud-Din Muhammad Baqi on July 14, 1564, in Kabul, was a prominent Sufi saint and the pioneer of the Naqshbandi Order in the Indian subcontinent. His father, Qazi Abdul Salam Khilji Samarqandi Qureshi, was a renowned scholar and saint of Kabul. From an early age, Baqi Billah exhibited a deep inclination towards spirituality. He traveled extensively through Central Asia, visiting places like Samarkand and Balkh, seeking spiritual knowledge and guidance. During his journey, he became a disciple of Khwaja Muhammad Amkanagi, under whose mentorship he advanced in the Naqshbandi Sufi order. Around 1600 AD, Baqi Billah settled in Delhi, where he established the Naqshbandi Order. His teachings emphasized strict adherence to the Sunnah (practices of the Prophet Muhammad) and the rejection of religious innovations. He attracted numerous disciples, the most notable being Ahmad Sirhindi, also known as Mujaddid Alif Sani, who played a significant role in revitalizing Islam in the region. Khwaja Baqi Billah passed away on November 29, 1603, in Delhi. He is buried in the Nabi Karim area of Delhi, where his shrine remains a site of reverence. His legacy endures through the continued influence of the Naqshbandi Order in South Asia, shaping the spiritual landscape of the region.
