The Sarmad Shaheed Dargah, situated near the eastern gate of Jama Masjid in Old Delhi, is a revered shrine dedicated to Hazrat Sarmad Shaheed, a mystic and poet who embraced Islam in the 17th century. The dargah is notable for its unique architecture, with the tomb of Sarmad Shaheed adorned in red tiles symbolizing his martyrdom, and the adjacent tomb of his mentor, Hazrat Hare Bhare Shah, covered in green tiles representing tranquility. Born as an Armenian Jew, Sarmad converted to Islam and adopted the name Mohammed Said. He arrived in Delhi in 1654 and became a disciple of Khwaja Syed Abul Qasim Hare Bhare, a Qadri Sufi. Prince Dara Shikoh was among his devotees. Sarmad's life was marked by his unconventional spiritual practices and his deep love for Abhay Chand, a young Hindu boy. Their relationship defied societal norms, leading Sarmad to adopt a state of nudity as a symbol of his spiritual quest. This act attracted the attention of Emperor Aurangzeb, who, perceiving Sarmad as a threat, had him arrested and executed. Despite his execution, Sarmad's legacy endures, and his dargah remains a place of spiritual significance, attracting devotees from all faiths. The dargah's interior reflects the contrasting aspects of Sarmad's life and teachings. The red tiles on his side symbolize his martyrdom, while the green tiles on Hare Bhare Shah's side represent peace and harmony.
