Chausath Khamba, translating to "64 pillars" in Urdu and Hindi, is a notable Mughal-era monument situated in the Nizamuddin Basti area of New Delhi. Constructed between 1623 and 1624, it was originally built as a tomb for Mirza Aziz Koka, the foster brother of Mughal Emperor Akbar. Mirza Aziz Koka was the son of Ataga Khan, Akbar's Prime Minister, and Jiji Anga, Akbar's wet nurse. The structure is a square building entirely made of white marble, distinguished by its 64 monolithic pillars supporting a flat roof. Each of the 25 bays is topped with a reverse dome, which are not visible externally. The walls feature five arches held by square pilasters, with marble trellised screens between them. The interior houses cenotaphs marking the tombs of Mirza Aziz Koka and his family, making it a family mausoleum. Located near the shrine of Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, Chausath Khamba is part of a complex that includes other significant structures such as the Urs Mahal and the tomb of poet Mirza Ghalib. The monument has been declared a heritage building and is maintained by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The forecourt of Chausath Khamba was landscaped by the Aga Khan Trust, and it has hosted cultural events like the Sufi qawwali music festival Jashn-E-Khusrau.
