The Maharaja of Kapurthala, a keen patron of education, purchased the land from the British for Rs. 35,000 and later leased 90 acres to the Canning College at a token rent of Rs. 3 per year. This institution eventually evolved into Lucknow University in 1922, transforming the once-royal playground into a prestigious center for learning.
