Madina Masjid is a neighbourhood mosque situated at 733, Lisari Road, Rasheed Nagar, Tarapuri, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh 250002. It is an active place of Islamic worship and an established religious landmark within the Rasheed Nagar–Tarapuri area. The mosque continues to serve the surrounding community through daily prayers, congregational worship and religious gatherings.
Madina Masjid forms part of the living Islamic heritage of Meerut, particularly the dense network of neighbourhood mosques that characterises the city's historic Muslim settlements. Unlike a monument whose significance is confined to its original construction period, the importance of Madina Masjid also lies in its continuing religious function and relationship with the surrounding community. The mosque's name, Madina, derives from Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah (Medina), the city associated with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the formation of the early Muslim community. Naming mosques after Madinah is a widespread devotional practice across South Asia and expresses a spiritual association with the city. The name itself, however, should not be interpreted as evidence of a direct historical connection between this mosque and Madinah. Located along Lisari Road, the mosque occupies a historically significant urban setting within Meerut's expanding Muslim neighbourhoods. Rasheed Nagar and the adjoining Lisari Road area contain a dense concentration of residential, commercial and religious institutions. Contemporary government records also document Rasheed Nagar and Lisari Road as established localities within Meerut, demonstrating the continuity of this neighbourhood as part of the city's urban fabric. Religious and Community Role Madina Masjid functions primarily as a community mosque. Its activities include the five daily prayers, Jumu'ah (Friday congregational prayer), Ramadan worship, Eid observances and other religious gatherings. As with many neighbourhood mosques, it may also provide an informal setting for Qur'anic learning, religious instruction, community consultation and charitable activities. Its significance therefore extends beyond the physical structure. The mosque represents the way in which religious institutions continue to organise community identity, collective worship and everyday social life within Meerut's Muslim neighbourhoods. Architectural and Historical Assessment At present, I could not locate sufficiently reliable archival documentation establishing the exact date of construction, founder, original architectural design, subsequent phases of alteration, or formal protected-heritage status of Madina Masjid. Consequently, the mosque should not be assigned an historical construction period without further evidence. A detailed heritage study would ideally examine municipal and waqf records, old maps, revenue documents, inscriptions, oral histories and the existing architectural fabric of the mosque. For heritage documentation purposes, it is most appropriately classified as a living religious heritage site whose principal significance lies in its continued use and its relationship with the historic development of Rasheed Nagar and the wider Lisari Road area.
