Shahi Eidgah is one of Meerut's most significant historic Islamic monuments, situated on Delhi Road in Devpuri. Traditionally dated to the early 13th century, it is an exceptional example of early Indo-Islamic religious architecture and continues to serve as a major congregational site for Eid prayers.
Shahi Eidgah is a major historical and religious landmark of Meerut, located in the Devpuri area along Delhi Road. Unlike an enclosed congregational mosque, an Eidgah is traditionally an open prayer enclosure designed for large gatherings during Eid. The Meerut Shahi Eidgah remains an important centre of communal worship and continues to accommodate large congregations during Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. The Government of Uttar Pradesh attributes its construction to Nasir ud din Mahmud, the eighth Sultan of Delhi and son of Iltutmish. Other historical accounts and local historical scholarship attribute its construction to Qutbuddin Aibak, dating it to approximately 1191–1210 CE. Because these accounts differ, the precise patron and construction date should be treated as a subject requiring further archaeological verification rather than presented as completely settled. Architecturally, the Eidgah is particularly notable for its brick construction and Arabic inscriptions incorporated into the brickwork. Historical accounts describe Qur'anic inscriptions formed directly into individual bricks, an unusual feature that contributes considerably to the monument's architectural and epigraphic importance. Accounts also describe its construction using clay and lime, with the structure reportedly built directly on the ground rather than upon a conventional underground foundation. The monument's importance extends beyond architecture. For centuries, the Shahi Eidgah has functioned as a major gathering place for the Muslim population of Meerut. Its continued use during the two major Islamic festivals demonstrates the continuity of religious practice and collective memory, making it both a historical monument and a living religious heritage site.
