Barwada Juni Masjid, also known as Juni Masjid (Old Mosque), is a historic mosque in Ghogha, Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, near the Gulf of Khambhat. It is widely regarded as one of the oldest surviving mosques in India. Historical tradition holds that Arab traders who arrived at the ancient port of Ghogha established the mosque during the early 7th century. Its most distinctive feature is the orientation of its mihrab, which points toward Jerusalem (Baitul Muqaddas) rather than Makkah. This has led historians and heritage researchers to associate the structure with the early period of Islam, when Muslims faced Jerusalem during prayer. The precise date and circumstances of its construction remain debated: some heritage sources place it around 622–629 CE, while INTACH records the traditional date as 629 CE. The mosque retains much of its original stone structure and contains an ancient Arabic inscription. It is currently in a dilapidated condition and is not used for regular prayers, but remains an important Islamic and architectural heritage site.
