Azim Khan's Tomb, also known as Akbar Khan's Tomb, is a 17th-century mausoleum located in the Mehrauli area of Delhi, India. The tomb of Azim Khan, also known as Akbar Khan, is believed to have been built in the 17th century. However, little is known about the historical background of Azim Khan. Local / Traditional Description Associated with the Site It is said that Azim Khan became a devoted follower of the Sufi Saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia. Architectural Style Indo-Persian (Hind-Persian) Description of the Building / Structure / Site The remarkable tomb is strategically located on a hillock. It is constructed on a high platform made of dressed stone masonry. A recently constructed flight of steps leads to the tomb, which is an impressive structure built on a square plan. The central section features an arched gateway, flanked by niches on either side. The actual doorway follows a trabeated design. The parapet is decorated with Kangooras. The tomb is crowned with a large bulbous dome, resting on an octagonal drum. The drum is adorned with Kangooras and turrets. The facade is plastered and features minimal incised plaster and stucco ornamentation. Surrounding the main structure, several anonymous graves made of sandstone are inscribed with Quranic verses in incised plaster. The tomb of Azim Khan stands as a striking example of Mughal-era architecture. Building / Structure Material and Other Components Basement: Constructed using random rubble stone masonry with lime mortar plaster. Walls: Built with lakhori bricks and lime mortar plaster. Facade Pillars: Made of Delhi quartzite. Lintel and Plinth Levels: Constructed with red sandstone. Flooring: Made of random rubble stones. Entrance: Secured with a grilled gate.
