The historic madrasa was originally established in the Sunehri Masjid at Chandni Chowk before being relocated to its current site. The mosque adjacent to this madrasa was built by the Nawab of Panipat. Local / Traditional Description Associated with the Built Heritage / Site The word Madrasa originates from Arabic and refers to any type of educational institution, whether secular or religious. Architectural Style The madrasa follows the Indo-Persian architectural style. Description of the Building / Structure / Site The madrasa, along with the mosque, is surrounded by a densely built urban area that overshadows the structure. A multi-cusped arched gateway leads into a spacious central courtyard. At the center of the courtyard lies a large rectangular water tank with trefoil-shaped faces on its width, intended for ceremonial ablutions before prayer and other religious rituals. On the western side, an impressive mosque stands with arcaded openings, arched niches, minarets, a parapet decorated with kangura patterns, and bulbous domes. The northern and southern sides feature a double-story structure that extends on either side and above the main entrance. The ground level consists of arcaded corridors on all four sides, interrupted by the main gateway. These multi-cusped arches, supported by sandstone columns, form the outer face of the corridors and provide access to the madrasa rooms. The chajja (overhanging eave) is supported by stone brackets. The upper floor contains rooms on three sides. Notable architectural features enhancing the aesthetic value of the heritage structure include circular columns, lattice railings, moldings, kangura patterns, multi-cusped arches, and small pointed arched niches. The mosque has eight entrances, with an inscription placed above the central one. The first floor includes a terrace over the verandah. Building / Structure Material and Other Components The mosque is primarily constructed from red sandstone, with its minarets painted in white and red. The ground floor of the madrasa is made of sandstone, while the upper part is built with Lakhori bricks, coated with lime. The madrasa features wooden doors and windows, while iron railings are visible on its upper section.
