Khan Sarovar is a historic artificial water reservoir situated near the southern entrance of Patan, on the road towards Chanasma. It is an important part of the region's water-management and architectural heritage. Historical accounts associate its restoration with Khan-i-Azam Mirza Aziz Kokah, a governor of Gujarat during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The Gujarati Vishwakosh notes that the reservoir existed earlier, possibly dating to the Chaulukya period, and was restored by Aziz Kokah between 1589 and 1594 CE. The reservoir is notable for its large, almost square layout, stone steps descending towards the water and masonry structures around its perimeter. The historical architectural survey by James Burgess also documents its inlet sluice and describes the presence of Hindu and Muslim religious structures along its margins, including the remains of a large Idgah. Khan Sarovar therefore represents an important example of the historical relationship between water infrastructure, public space and religious architecture in Patan.
