Qutub Minar, located in Mehrauli, Delhi, is one of the most iconic monuments of India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Standing at a height of 72.5 meters, it is the tallest brick minaret in the world and an outstanding example of Indo-Islamic architecture. The construction of Qutub Minar was started in 1192 by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, to celebrate his victory over the last Hindu kingdom of Delhi. However, Aibak could only complete the base; the remaining three storeys were added by his successor and son-in-law, Iltutmish, around 1220. In the 14th century, the top floor was damaged by lightning and later restored by Firoz Shah Tughlaq, who also made some modifications to the structure. The minaret is made primarily of red sandstone, with marble used in the upper storeys. Each storey is marked by a projecting balcony and tapers in diameter as it ascends. The Qutub Minar complex also includes several other historically significant structures, such as the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, Alai Darwaza, and the Iron Pillar, making it an important site that reflects the beginning of Muslim rule in India and the architectural brilliance of that era.
