The Sadar Bazar Jame Masjid, established in 1896, is a historic mosque in Imphal, Manipur, located in the vibrant Paona Bazar area. The Sadar Bazar Jame Masjid, nestled in the heart of Imphal, Manipur, is a historic and culturally significant mosque established in 1896 AD. Located on the western side of Masjid Road in Paona Bazar, Ward No. 4 of the Imphal Municipal Corporation, it lies on the eastern bank of the Nambul River. Spanning 0.0800 hectares, the mosque occupies a plot under C.S. Dag No. 100 of 17/A Khwai Village, Lamphel Sub-Division, Imphal West District. This sacred site serves as a spiritual and social hub for the Muslim community in Imphal, reflecting the region’s diverse heritage.The mosque’s origins trace back to Mohammed Farid Khansaman, a native of Uttar Pradesh, who arrived in Manipur in the late 19th century. Recognizing the absence of a mosque for Muslim employees and the business community in Imphal Town, he appealed to the then Political Agent of Manipur for land. In 1896, the Political Agent granted the request, and Farid constructed a temporary katcha (mud) structure with tent roofing, laying the foundation for the mosque. This initial structure served as a place of worship until more permanent developments followed.From 1896 to 1922, Mohammed Farid and his associates managed the mosque as Mutawalli (caretakers). In 1922, the responsibility passed to Zuman Mia-Din Mohammed, who served until 1942. During World War II, when Japanese forces bombed Imphal, the caretakers temporarily left, prompting local residents of Hafiz Hatta to form an eight-member committee to oversee the mosque. This committee, led by Alhaj Abbas Khan as Chairman and Md. Abdul Ghani as Secretary, included members like Md. Abdul Qadir, Obedullah, Ramjan Ali, Abdul Rahman, Chand Khan, and Md. personally. Their efforts ensured the mosque’s continuity during turbulent times.In 1975, the Sadar Bazar Jame Masjid was formally registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (No. 1639 of 1975), marking its institutionalization. By 1994, it was recognized as a wakf institution under the Wakf Act, 1954 (No. 52 of 1994) by the Manipur Wakf Board, solidifying its status as a key religious site. These registrations underscore its enduring role as a community cornerstone.Architecturally, the mosque reflects modest yet functional design, typical of early regional Islamic structures. While specific details about its current architecture are limited, its historical significance lies in its role as a gathering place for worship and community activities.
