The original structure dates back to the Lodi period. The area of Najafgarh gets its name from Mirza Najaf Khan, a prominent historical figure who served as the chief commander of the Mughal army during the reign of Shah Alam II. The tomb, commonly referred to as the Tomb of Rana Sahib, is built on a square plan. Its most striking feature is a bulbous dome, which is supported by twelve finely dressed stone pillars. These pillars are rectangular in shape, with a square base and a square abacus (the flat slab at the top of the pillar). Above the abacus, each pillar features a bracket-shaped capital on all four sides, which helps in supporting the beams that form the base of the dome. Architecturally, the style reflects Indo-Persian influences, typical of the Lodi and early Mughal period. The entire structure is constructed using bricks and stones. During later renovations, tiles were added, and the flooring was upgraded with marble, enhancing the visual and structural appeal of the tomb. Despite modifications, the tomb retains its historical essence and architectural integrity.
