This historic haveli was once part of the grand estate of Colonel James Skinner, a prominent figure in colonial India. Initially serving under the Marathas, Skinner later allied with the British and founded the renowned cavalry regiment known as Skinner’s Horse. The haveli also holds academic significance, as it housed the Hindu College before it was relocated to its present site in the North Campus of Delhi University. Located near the northern walls of the old city of Shahjahanabad, the residence was built under European supervision in the mid-19th century and reflected an Indo-Persian architectural style. Although much of the original estate has been lost to urban encroachment and unauthorized construction, a few architectural remnants remain, most notably the grand gateway with its distinctive multi-cusped arch and stone brackets supporting a projected chhajja. The original wooden doors still survive, opening into a large courtyard that once featured a marble platform and flooring. Deeply cherished by James Skinner, this haveli stands as an important piece of Delhi’s built heritage, bearing immense historical and architectural value.
