Shahi Masjid Of Lodhi Period

Shahi Masjid Of Lodhi Period

Approximately 1 km from R.K. Puram Metro Station Airport: IGI Airport Railway Station: New Delhi Railway Station Bus Station: R.K. Puram Sector 5

The structure dates back to the Lodi period, a time that witnessed significant developments in architecture, marked by the introduction of new design elements. One of the key features of this era was the construction of mosques and tombs on raised platforms, a characteristic that added grandeur to the monuments. The major architectural contributions during this period are attributed to rulers such as Saiyyad Lodi, Bahlol Lodi, and Sikander Lodi. Architecturally, the structure reflects the Indo-Persian style, blending traditional Indian elements with Persian influences. It is a single-storey building with an east-facing entrance built on a rectangular plan. The entrance is accessed through a stepped pathway leading to an arched opening adorned with a trellis pattern. A series of Kangura (battlement-style) patterns and alcoves decorate the entrance, adding to its ornamental appeal. The southern exterior wall features niches and Kangura motifs, while the western wall is marked by a centrally placed turret also embellished with Kangura design. A similar turret is found on the southern wall, enhancing the monument’s symmetry and visual appeal. The raised platform on which the structure stands further contributes to its impressive skyline presence. In terms of construction materials, the monument is built using dressed rubble masonry bonded with lime mortar. The entire structure is coated with lime, which not only provides a smooth finish but also helps in preserving the building over time.
