Madrasa Shahi, also known as Jāmi'a Qāsmia Madrasa Shahi, is a historic Deobandi seminary in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. Founded in 1879 by Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi to educate the underprivileged, it follows the Dars-e-Nizami curriculum alongside Arabic literature, Qirat, and Mufti degree courses. Over 140 years old, it remains one of North India's oldest Islamic universities, with a legacy of producing prominent scholars and fostering community development under continued local patronage.
Established in 1879 as Madrasatul Ghuraba (“School of the Poor”) by Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi, who also founded Darul Uloom Deoband, Madrasa Shahi (Jamia Qasmia Madrasa Shahi) in Moradabad has evolved into a prestigious Islamic seminary . Located at Lal Bagh Chowraha, Faiz Ganj, it was initially intended to provide affordable Islamic education to economically challenged Muslims. The first principal was Ahmad Hasan Amrohi, and patrons have included Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, Mahmud Hasan Deobandi, Hussain Ahmad Madani, Zakariyya Kandhlawi, As'ad Madani, and today, Syed Ashhad Rashidi serves as the rector . Its curriculum encompasses the classical Dars-e-Nizami syllabus, Arabic language and literature, calligraphy, Fatwa (Mufti) training, Quranic memorization and Qirat, along with courses in jurisprudence. It also publishes the Urdu monthly Nidā-e-Shāhi since 1990 . Infrastructure includes classrooms, a library, prayer halls, and dormitories. It selectively avoids government funding, drawing support from private patrons and community donations . The madrasa maintains active engagement through Dastar-bandī (graduation ceremonies), social media outreach, and alumni networks .
