Historical Background: Kharbooze ka Gumbad is a small, fluted domed pavilion believed to have been built in the 14th century during the Tughlaq dynasty’s rule. Its name, meaning "Dome of the Muskmelon," comes from the unique shape of its dome, which resembles a halved muskmelon (kharbooza). The dome is said to be carved out of a single solid stone, resting delicately on a small octagonal base supported by four pillars. Architectural Significance: This miniature chhatri (canopy) is one of Delhi’s prettiest and smallest fluted domes and showcases the architectural aesthetics of the Tughlaq period. Though relatively obscure, it joins a rich tradition of fluted domes seen across the capital in sites like Makhdumi Mosque, Mir Taqi’s tomb, and Teen Burj. Myths & Uncertainty: There’s no verified historical record linking it to Sufi saint Kabir-ud-din Auliya, though the saint's grave (Lal Gumbad) lies nearby. It is speculated that the structure could either be a tomb of another individual or a detached element of a larger complex, now lost to time. Current Status: Kharbooze ka Gumbad is situated within the compound of a Montessori school, built before the Supreme Court’s ruling prohibiting construction within 100 meters of protected monuments. Fortunately, its location has shielded it from vandalism, unlike many other forgotten structures in Delhi. Preservation Efforts: The INTACH Delhi Chapter (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) has taken charge of its restoration along with 18 other minor monuments. INTACH’s involvement is crucial, as smaller and lesser-known monuments like this are highly vulnerable to neglect, encroachment, and urban development.
