The present citadel at Purana Qila is believed to have been constructed during the reign of Mughal emperor Humayun and Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri in the 1530s. This site holds immense historical and cultural importance. Traditionally, it is believed to be the site of Indraprastha, the legendary capital of the Pandavas mentioned in the great Indian epic, the Mahabharata. The architectural style of the site is Indo-Persian, reflecting a blend of Indian and Persian design elements. One of the significant structures within the complex is the hammam (bathhouse), which is built using Lakhori bricks on a rectangular plan. It features staircases leading to a raised platform and another set descending into the underground chamber of the hammam. Inside, one can observe arched niches, arched gateways, and the remains of a ribbed water chute and terracotta pipes. The entire structure is constructed using Lakhori bricks and is plastered with lime mortar.
