Sheikh Hasan bin Tahir Jaunpuri, born in the late 15th century (908–909 AH / 1502–1503 CE), was a significant yet understated Sufi figure of the late Delhi Sultanate period. Though his family originated from Multan, he was born and raised in Bihar and later moved to Jaunpur, a major intellectual center of the time. There, he studied under leading scholars, including the Chishti Sufi Sheikh Shihabuddin Dubahbi. Notably, Sheikh Hasan delved deeply into Fusus al-Hikam, the seminal mystical text by Ibn ʿArabī, embracing the doctrine of waḥdat al-wujūd (unity of being)—a position that often placed him at odds with orthodox critics. His spiritual stature grew further when he became the guide to Prince Fath Khan, the younger brother of Sultan Sikandar Lodi. During a political conspiracy, Sheikh Hasan’s intervention was crucial in saving the prince, which earned him favor at the Lodi court. As a result, he resided briefly in Agra before relocating to Delhi’s Vijaymandal, a deserted royal pavilion near Tughlaqabad, where he established a spiritual retreat. There, alongside his son Sheikh Muhammad bin Hasan Tahir—himself a renowned mystic and scholar—he nurtured a vibrant Sufi circle until his death in 1503 CE (909 AH). The dargah at Vijaymandal, though modest, stands out as a rare vestige of late-Sultanate Sufi patronage embedded within a former royal complex. Unlike grand shrines built for more prominent saints, this secluded site reflects the quiet yet profound impact of scholar-saints who bridged intellectual mysticism with spiritual leadership. The continuity of the site—from its origins under the Tughlaq rulers to its later association with the Lodi dynasty—underscores the evolving religious and political role of Sufis in the Delhi Sultanate. Sheikh Hasan’s legacy was carried forward by his son, who continued to reside at Vijaymandal and authored several mystical works, cementing their family's role in shaping the region’s Sufi thought. Today, the dargah remains a serene but often overlooked marker of a spiritual lineage that united royal favor with deep esoteric insight.
