Commissioned in 1575–76 AD (983 AH) by Shaikh Abdu‑n Nabi Nu’mani—appointed Sadr‑ul‑Sadur (Chief Justice for religious affairs) under Emperor Akbar—the mosque was built in the then-expanding Mughal realm . Constructed in early Mughal style, the mosque comprises a 73×33-foot oblong prayer hall of rubble masonry, with a central hemispherical dome flanked by flat-vaulted chambers . An original marble tablet, inscribed by Faizi, commemorates its foundation and namesake; this tablet is now preserved in the Delhi Archaeological Museum . Tragedy struck after Abdu‑n Nabi returned from charity in Mecca—he was accused of misusing funds, arrested, imprisoned, and executed around **1584 AD (992 AH)** . Following India’s Partition, the mosque became the headquarters of Jamiat Ulama‑e‑Hind, who added landscaped courtyards, fountains, jaali screens, and hostel blocks while preserving the central dome, sanctuary, and Qibla wall . Today, it remains an active heritage site—quietly standing on Mathura Road by Tilak Bridge, a testament to Delhi’s layered history .
