The Sunehri Masjid, or the "Golden Mosque," is a historic 18th-century place of worship located in Old Delhi, India. Built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah, this exquisite mosque was commissioned by the influential Mughal noble Roshan-ud-Daula as a tribute to his spiritual guide, Shah Bhik. Situated near the prominent Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib on the once-grand Chandni Chowk, a boulevard leading to the Red Fort, the Sunehri Masjid boasts a unique architectural style. While extensions have been added over the years to accommodate the growing number of worshippers, the mosque's original grandeur is still evident. Unfortunately, the Sunehri Masjid currently faces the threat of encroachment, impacting its preservation. The mosque's construction dates back to the period between 1721 and 1722, a time when Roshan-ud-Daula was steadily gaining prominence in the Mughal court. However, the tranquility of its early years was disrupted in 1739 with the devastating invasion of Delhi by the Persian ruler, Nadir Shah. This tragic event resulted in widespread destruction and immense loss of life across the city, leaving a profound impact on the Sunehri Masjid and its surroundings. In 1897, the esteemed Islamic scholar Amin al-Din established the Madrasa Aminia within the premises of the Sunehri Masjid. This institution, dedicated to Islamic learning, later relocated to Kashmiri Gate in 1917. Architecturally, the Sunehri Masjid stands elevated on a plinth, accessible via a set of stairs. Its striking silhouette is defined by three bulbous, gilded domes that crown the structure, complemented by slender minarets that pierce the sky. The mosque's facade features three arched entryways, inviting worshippers within. The interior is thoughtfully divided into three distinct bays. The intricate beauty of the Sunehri Masjid is further enhanced by the exquisite stucco decorations that adorn both its exterior and interior. These delicate embellishments showcase intricate arabesques and captivating floral motifs, adding a touch of elegance and refinement to the overall design.
