The Tomb of Darya Khan Lohani, situated in Kotla Mubarakpur near South Extension-I in South Delhi, stands out as one of the most distinctive Lodi-era tombs in Delhi. Darya Khan Lohani served as the chief justice under Sultan Bahlol Lodi (1451-1489 CE) and later as a vakil (lawyer) during Sultan Sikandar Lodi's reign (1489-1517 CE). While the origin of the suffix "Lohani" to his name remains unclear, the tomb reflects his prominence during the Lodi period. Architecturally, the tomb is remarkable, elevated on a square platform measuring 27.5 meters across and 2.4 meters high, accessed by twelve steps from the eastern side. The cenotaph is further distinguished by its placement on a central circular platform. Each corner of the square platform is adorned with domed pavilions resting on twelve square columns. Though the domes are partially ruined, remnants of intricate incised plaster decorations, including inscribed Quranic ayats, can still be observed within. Despite the absence of inscriptions that could confirm its exact construction date, the tomb is believed to date back to the early 16th century. Today, amidst the bustling urban landscape of Delhi, the tomb finds itself encircled by high-rise buildings and a busy roundabout. However, the serene gardens that envelop the structure provide a peaceful retreat from the city's vibrant chaos, a testament to the tomb's enduring historical and architectural significance.
