Purana Qila, meaning "Old Fort," is one of the oldest surviving forts in Delhi, India, with a rich history that traces back to the ancient city of Indraprastha, believed to have been founded by the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. The current structure of the fort was built in the 16th century by the Mughal emperor Humayun and later expanded by Sher Shah Suri after he defeated Humayun. The fort reflects a blend of Mughal and Afghan architecture, featuring massive gateways, thick ramparts, and beautiful structures like the Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque and Sher Mandal—an octagonal tower where Humayun is said to have died after falling down the stairs. Archaeological excavations inside the fort have revealed remains from several historical periods, confirming continuous habitation for over 2,500 years. Today, Purana Qila stands not only as a remarkable architectural site but also as a testament to Delhi’s layered and complex past.
